Lent 5

John 12.1-8

Context

In the fifth week of Lent, as Holy Week draws closer, we move to John’s Gospel and the story of the woman who poured out her entire jar of costly perfume onto Jesus’ feet.

Common thread – Overwhelming gift (John 12.1-8)

In a bewildering reply to a protest that pouring valuable perfume over his feet is a waste of money, Jesus says that it had been bought for his burial. We begin to develop an insight into what is about to happen.

An alternative thread for adults, A story of tenderness, draws on John 12.1-8.
