Matthew 25.1-13Context
Our reading of Matthew’s parables changes gear this week. The onset of early darkness heralds the approach of deep winter and the coming of Christmas. In a similar way the parables seem to change gear, heralding a more urgent response to the message about salvation.
Common thread: Be prepared (Matthew 25.1-13)
The well-known but puzzling tale of the waiting bridesmaids challenges us this week. As we seek to unravel this rather enigmatic story, a closer look at Middle Eastern marriage customs, still widely celebrated even today, offers us a little more understanding.
An alternative thread, Facing death with hope, is based on 1 Thessalonians 4.13-18.
