Proper 22

Matthew 21.33-46

Context

The three related readings this week are characterised by a vineyard theme, a well-established metaphor within Jewish writing and teaching. Jesus takes this idea and develops a new parable to warn the leaders who oppose him against the route they are set upon.

Common thread: Accept or reject? (Matthew 21.33-46)

The ROOTS resources – for adults, all ages together, children and young people – explore the metaphor of the vineyard in Isaiah, Psalm 80 and the Gospel reading, challenging us to consider whether we delight in what God offers or whether we are constantly looking for something else. This week’s Fruit of the Spirit is faithfulness.

An alternative thread for adults explores the use of metaphor of the vineyard in the Bible.

These resources were first published in 2008.
