Proper 25

Matthew 22.34-46

Context

As the autumn draws on and our Gospel readings approach the final chapters of Matthew, Jesus sums up his teaching through the Great Commandment. The Old Testament reading provides some background to this with some examples of the Jewish laws about neighbourly behaviour. Love sums it all up very well.

Common thread: The law of love (Matthew 22.34-46)

The focus this week across the ROOTS resources – for adults, all ages together, children and young people – is on the Law and laws in a very precise way. In the Gospel reading we meet another encounter between Jesus and the Pharisees about the Greatest Commandment. The reading from Leviticus provides an account of some passages from the Mosaic laws about neighbourliness. This week’s Fruit of the Spirit is love.

An alternative thread for adults based on the Epistle to the Thessalonians explores gentleness.

These resources were first published in 2008.
