The readings during this month and then into Advent constantly exhort us to be ready for the coming of Christ, but how can we know what that means and what we must do? Last week we discovered that we are to be life-long learners and can never afford to be complacent. This week’s Gospel reading suggests that the responsibility is ours but that we can work together to achieve it. We can join in to prepare, and if we don’t work with the community, we might be left out in the cold.
The ROOTS resources this week focus on the Gospel reading and address for the first time the need for preparation which will recur frequently from now until Christmas. We focus on the parable of the bridesmaids, half of whom were ready and half of whom were not. Reference to the writings of the prophet Amos assure us that this was not a new idea when Jesus told the parable.
An alternative thread, in the Word and Response materials for adults, focuses on justice and draws on the readings from Amos and 1 Thessalonians.
These resources were first published in 2008.
