Proper 29 Christ the King

Matthew 25.31-46

Context

The Church year concludes today by celebrating the reign of Christ the King. We do not, however, read of the triumphal entry into Jerusalem or the visit of wise men with their royal gifts. Instead, we hear Jesus’ words in Matthew 25: ‘I was hungry and you gave me food, I was naked and you gave me clothing.’ When I needed a neighbour, were you there?

Common thread: Really a king? (Matthew 25.31-46)

The ROOTS resources this week explore the words of Jesus in Matthew 25, expressed so clearly in Sydney Carter’s much loved hymn, ‘When I needed a neighbour, were you there?’ This is not a king who rides a chariot or reigns at a distance, it is a king who comes as a servant, whom we serve by our ministry to those in need.

An alternative thread for adults focuses on the sheep and goats judgement metaphor in Matthew 25.31-46.

These resources were first published in 2008.
