Easter 2

John 20.19-31

Context

In the early weeks of the Easter season we hear again the resurrection stories. This week we find the disciples gathered fearfully in a room which Jesus enters, offering peace and providing a context for the encounter with Thomas, who, having not yet seen the risen Christ, demands an encounter with the restored body if he is to believe. The encounter prompts Thomas to proclaim Christ as ‘my Lord and my God’. We notice that this sharing of peace is the catalyst for recognising the risen Christ and ask ourselves what this means for us.

Common thread – Peace be with you (John 20.19-31)

The ROOTS resources this week look at how, when the disciples encounter the risen Jesus, his first words each time are a sharing of peace. We notice that this is the catalyst for recognising Jesus, and creates the space for Thomas to express both honest concerns and a great statement of faith.

An alternative thread for adults,

How then shall we live? examines the description of community living in Acts 4.32-35.

These resources were first published in Issue 40 March/April 2009.
