Following last week’s exploration of the image of the Good Shepherd, one of the ‘I am’ sayings which characterise John’s Gospel, we explore another, ‘I am the vine’.
The ROOTS resources this week untangle some comforting teaching of Jesus as we explore the rich metaphor of the vine. The cultivation of vines and the production of wine were staple agricultural processes in the Bible lands – wine is a metaphor used throughout the Scriptures. Jesus develops this further in his description of our connectedness to him (abiding) and we explore this beyond the agricultural imagery as we look at our human connectedness and interdependence too.
To the ends of the earth, looks at the implication of Philip’s meeting with the Ethiopian eunuch described in Acts 8.26-40.
These resources were first published in Issue 41 May/June 2009.
