Proper 28

Mark 13.1-8

Context

We have reached the final teaching day of the lectionary year: next week is really one of celebration before the beginning of Advent. Our readings from Mark’s Gospel have shown us Jesus’ challenges about the law, and teaching about status and money: in today’s reading Jesus tackles the issue of trust and of disaster.

Common thread – The kingdom to come (Mark 13.1-8)

The juxtaposition of this Gospel reading with the apocalyptic Daniel passage emphasises the connection in Jewish thought between the destruction of the Temple and the approach of the end times. As human beings we long for certainty. In this passage from Mark’s Gospel the four disciples are like the rest of us, demanding to know of Jesus what signs will herald this. But seeking certainty will lead us astray; faithful steadfastness, whatever the circumstances, will lead us into the kingdom. An alternative thread for adults Belonging together is drawn from Hebrews 10.
