Palm Sunday

Luke 19.28-40

Planning

Before you begin, this week’s material is presented slightly differently. Please familiarise yourself with the layout before you begin to plan. Instead of a sermon this week, we offer a series of reflections on the two Gospel readings and focus our thoughts by using two works of art, Pietro Lorenzetti’s, Entry into Jerusalem for the story of Palm Sunday, and Hans Memling’s Scenes from the Passion of Christ, for the Passion narrative. Words from Psalms and from Philippians express our thoughts. The Gathering section of the service focuses on the Palm Gospel and the Word part of the service focuses on the Passion.

Context

Having travelled through Lent, we arrive at the beginning of Holy Week, to experience the exhilaration of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem and then the dark moments of the Passion.

Common threads – Praise and passion (Luke 19.28-40 and Psalm 118.1-2,19-29)

Today we experience the tensions of Holy Week as we explore together Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, as part of our gathering worship, followed by a detailed reflection on the events of the Passion when we open the Word together.

An alternative thread, The way of destruction and the way of forgiveness, is a sermon drawn from Luke 23.1-49.

These resources were first published in Issue 46 March/April 2010.
