Workers in the vineyard week1

18 - 24 September 2011

Proper 20 Year A

Matthew 20.1-16

Context

Another leap through Matthew’s Gospel, right across chapter 19, finds us with a group of vineyard workers. The vineyard is a significant setting for biblical teaching, in both the Old and New Testaments. Later in this issue we shall explore this setting in some detail, but today we continue to concentrate on behaviour.

Common thread: Don’t sulk (Matthew 20.1-16)

Matthew’s demanding, practical lessons continue. We must watch that we don’t become overly concerned with our own opinions and feelings. Community is threatened when individuals become self-important.

An alternative thread, Dying is gain, draws on Philippians 1.21-30.

These resources were first published in Issue 55 September/October 2011.
