Mark 1.9-15

Becoming the good news - Week 1 of 6

Six weeks in which we observe Jesus taking up the mission of the Old Testament writers. This will help us think about how we can enter the stories of Jesus and become good news ourselves.

Jesus who is the good news

On this first Sunday of Lent we read Mark’s terse account of the baptism of Jesus, his temptation in the wilderness and his first proclamation of the good news, in Galilee.

This week’s reading, Mark 1.9-15, provides an opportunity to:

  • identify images from the Hebrew Scriptures in the Gospel reading (AAA)
  • get an overview of the Lenten theme (AAA & CYP)
  • encounter the idea of angels as ‘those who wait on us' (AAA & CYP)
  • become familiar with the account of the baptism and temptation of Jesus (CYP)

These resources were first published in Issue 57 – January/February 2012.
