Mark 11.1-11

Becoming the good news - Week 6 of 6

Six weeks in which we observe Jesus taking up the mission of the Old Testament writers. This will help us think about how we can enter the stories of Jesus and become good news ourselves.

Hosanna!

As we read of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, we might form the impression of an impending triumph that then goes horribly wrong. Careful consideration will help us to read the event more subtly and to perceive its roots and the coming Passion within the story.

This week's reading, Mark 11.1-11 , provides an opportunity to:

  • recognise the distinctiveness of Mark’s description of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and its links with the Old Testament Scriptures (AAA)
  • recognise that joy and sorrow, triumph and disaster are closely juxtaposed (AAA)
  • become familiar with Mark’s account of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem (CYP)
  • consider the place of welcome and joy (CYP).
