Palm Sunday

Mark 11.1-11

Context

Following five week’s exploration of the development of the covenant between God and his people described in the Hebrew Bible, we move to the Gospels as Passiontide begins. The ministry and journey of Jesus are now approaching their climax. He is about to  challenge the authorities in such as way as will leave them no alternative but to have him removed. In the back of our minds we need to catch his kingdom vision, match his enormous courage and overcome our fear.

Common thread – Do not be afraid (Mark 11.1-11)

The ROOTS resources this week move to the New Testament, to the account in Mark’s Gospel of the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on what we call Palm Sunday. God’s covenant with his people now takes on powerful meaning for each of us for in Jesus, we are confronted by the cost of unconditional love. We accept it for ourselves; do we offer ourselves for others?

An alternative thread for adults,

The most important relationship? follows the Passion epistle, Philippians 2.5-11.

These resources were first published in Issue 40 March/April 2009.
