Looking for the whole picture of Jesus
Mark 1.1-8Mark introduces his story of the life of Jesus as ‘good news’. But before getting to the content of that good news, he presents John, a messenger sent to prepare the way and who baptizes people in the wilderness.
In the middle of Advent, when we’re all waiting for Christmas to arrive, it is interesting to encounter a story about John the Baptist, a man who was also waiting: waiting for the arrival of the Messiah; waiting to baptize him and see him start his ministry on earth. The inclusion of John at this moment in Advent helps us to see the much bigger picture than just the sweet baby in the manger – Jesus as God but also a man who came to live on earth and change the world.
