Advent 2

Mark 1.1-8

Context

Advent gathers pace and by now restaurants are serving Christmas menus, the round of office parties has begun and Christmas decorations are appearing. Yet Christians are called at this time simply to ‘prepare’. Perhaps if we make our preparation active, it will assume a greater significance. The spareness of John’s message recounted by Mark may seem to be in direct contrast to the burgeoning Christmas decorations around us.

Common thread: Be prepared (Mark 1.1-8)

The ROOTS resources this week look at the message of John recorded in Mark’s Gospel. John came from the desert to help people prepare for the Messiah. His words echo the words of the prophet in Isaiah 40 which are tender, yet full of activity. We consider what we need to do to be ready and how we might help others to prepare also.

An alternative thread for adults, Comfort, comfort my people, draws on the words of Isaiah 40.1-11.

These resources were first published in 2008.
