Basic background information about pilgrims and pilgrimage, focusing on Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress
In the Middle Ages, many people set out on pilgrimages. They travelled to important churches and cathedrals, often to pay homage to the memory of well-known saints who were buried there. To make sure of their safety on the way, they travelled in groups in case they were attacked. Often the pilgrims would tell stories to each other to make the time pass more pleasantly.
