Information: The Flying Doctor

Information about John Flynn, who established what is commonly known as the Flying Doctor Service, to bring help to those in need, right where they were

John Flynn, a missionary working in Australia, had a great concern for sick people in isolated communities in the outback, who were either long-term sufferers, had been taken ill in a crisis, or even hurt in an accident. Some of those needing attention might be a living in a small settlement with no one who had medical knowledge, or suitable transport to take them to the nearest doctor, who might perhaps be hundreds of miles away. So Flynn set up what is now known as the Flying Doctor Service. In fact, it was only after the First World War that Flynn made use of planes. Originally members of his team travelled by camel and then later by cars, as early planes were unreliable and rather flimsy - even unsafe.
