Idea: The global village - statistics

Statistics that will help in exploring the diversity of the make-up of the world's population and the distribution of its resources, that can easily be adpated into a visual illustration

Imagine our global village. What is its population like?

If we could shrink the population of the world to a village of 100 people, with existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look like this:

57 would live in Asia, 21 in Europe, 12 in North and South America, 8 in Africa and 2 elsewhere.
70 would be non-white; 30 would be white.
30 would be Christian; 70 would not.
Half of the entire world's wealth would be in the hands of 6 people, all of whom would be citizens of the United States of America.
70 would not be able to read.
50 would suffer malnutrition.
80 would live in substandard housing.
Only 1 would have a college education.
