Proper 20

Matthew 20.1-16

Context

September/October is time for the grape harvest in the northern hemisphere. It is incidental, but providential, that we read Matthew’s story of the workers in the vineyard now. Nevertheless, the season supports our imaginative entry into the story.

Common thread: More than fair (Matthew 20.1-16)

The ROOTS resources this week – for adults, all ages together, children and young people –  is on God’s grace and on generosity. The parable of the workers in the vineyard is challenging on many fronts: our common thread across both magazines explores distinctions  between fairness and generosity and thus encounters the concept of grace. This week’s Fruit of the Spirit is peace.

An alternative thread for adults drawn from the Philippians reading asks what is required to live in a manner worthy of the gospel.

These resources were first published in 2008.
