Christmas 1

Luke 2.22-40

Context

After the rush and excitement of Christmas, this week provides the opportunity to sit back and reflect a little. This is an ideal context to consider Luke’s description of the visit of Mary and Joseph to the Temple with the infant Jesus, and to take stock at the end of an old calendar year whilst looking forward to a new one.

Common thread – Look back, look ahead (Luke 2.22-40)

The ROOTS resources this week focus on the encounter of Mary and Joseph with old Simeon and the prophetess Anna when they take the infant Jesus to the Temple for the purification ritual. Both have looked forward to the coming of the Messiah and recognise him in the babe in arms. There is also an opportunity to explore what looking backwards and looking forwards has meant to others and to explore what it might mean for us now.

An alternative thread, for adults, uses Luke 2.22-40 to examine the ways in which Jesus might be recognised.
