Epiphany 1

Mark 1.4-11

Context

On this second stage of the Epiphany journey we encounter the glory of God revealed through the baptism of Jesus himself. John proclaims repentance and the coming of one who will be greater, before Jesus appears, and a voice reveals his identity: the Son, the Beloved. We, too, must answer the call to repent, respond to the Spirit and seek God’s revelation.

Common thread – Baptised and affirmed (Mark 1.4-11)

The focus this week across the ROOTS resources is on affirmation of Jesus at his baptism at the very start of his earthly ministry. The descent of the Spirit and the voice which declares him to be ‘The Son, the Beloved’ reveal further the nature of Christ’s identity.

An alternative thread, Baptised into what? based on Acts 19 within the Word and Response material for adults follows Paul on his journey to Ephesus and his experience of the power of the Spirit at work there.

These resources were first published in Issue 39 January/February 2009.
