Proper 11

Mark 6.30-34,53-56

Context

We continue reading Mark 6 this week and look at two non-consecutive sections. The passage which separates them is the account of the feeding of the five thousand which we shall encounter next week in John’s Gospel.

Common thread – Rest awhile (Mark 6.30–34, 53–56)

The ROOTS resources this week look at the return of the disciples from their initial foray into mission, anxious to tell Jesus how they fared. They need rest and recuperation. Later they are mobbed by a crowd anxious for healing. We consider the importance of rest and recuperation and of recognising others’ needs. The Psalm 23 may be laid alongside the Gospel for consideration in a creative way.

An alternative thread for adults

Peace to you, is based on Ephesians 2.11–22.

These resources were first published in Issue 42 July/August 2009.
