Advent 1

Jeremiah 33.14-16

Context

Through Advent we shall try to understand the significance of some of the places mentioned in the Hebrew Scriptures which we hear as we prepare to celebrate the coming of the Messiah. This will help us to understand why these names keep recurring in Scripture and in the carols we sing at this time of year and develop a familiarity of the world into which Jesus came.

Common thread – A tale of two houses (Jeremiah 33.14-16)

Our exploration of the world into which Jesus came, with its expectations of a Messiah, begins with Jeremiah’s reference to the Two Kingdoms of Israel and Judah. The short reading simply mentions the two places within Jeremiah’s prophecy about a new order and reconciliation and this gives an opportunity to explore some of the background to this. An alternative thread for adults God promises us a tomorrow is drawn from Luke 21.25-36.
