Easter 4

Revelation 7.9-17

Context

We arrive at the fourth Sunday of Easter and at a Gospel reading which always focuses on the Good Shepherd. This year, in our reading of Revelation, the Good Shepherd becomes the Lamb, and as our Easter praise continues, we worship with the angels as those who have suffered are led by the Shepherd-Lamb to streams of living water.

Common thread – No more suffering (Revelation 7.9-17)

Another group of characters enter the story as we encounter those 'who are robed in white', who have come out of the great ordeal and stand before the throne. The Christians of the Early Church (for whom this book was written) are encouraged in the face of persecution, for whatever they endure, the Lamb will be their shepherd and will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

An alternative thread, Would the mystery preacher please reveal their identity?, is drawn from John 10.22-30.
