For this third week in our Elijah study we jump ahead, omitting the showdown with the priests of Baal (1 Kings 18.20-46), which nevertheless forms the context of today’s account of Elijah’s encounter with the Lord.

This week’s description of Elijah’s encounter with God in the silence is framed by storms, both literal and metaphorical, which encourage us to name, with a degree of reality, the ups and downs of discipleship which are the experience of any Christian.
