This week we complete our journey with Elijah. His successor, Elisha, picks up his mantle as Elijah is taken up into the heavens. Here is the clue to Elijah’s continuing significance and his association, in the New Testament, with Jesus and John the Baptist: because he did not die, he was expected, one day, to return.
While the story of Elijah’s departure into the heavens may appear rather fantastical to the twenty-first century reader, it encourages us to consider, celebrate and, perhaps, resolve to improve everything associated with the passing on of responsibilities.
An alternative thread for adults, The good news of freedom, explores Galatians 5.1,13-25.
