Proper 17

Luke 14.1,7-14

Context

We move back to parables again this week, a parable about a banquet told in the context of a banquet. News headlines are often about celebrities who are significant simply because they are wealthy. Jesus’ parable challenges the rules that keep people divided from one another and suggests that in serving each other, barriers are broken, and the reign of God can break in.

Common thread – Because they cannot repay you (Luke 14.1,7-14)

The Roots resources this week look at the principle of lifting up the lowly and supporting the humble and meek.

An alternative thread for adults, The constancy of Jesus, is based on Hebrews 12.1-8,15-16.

These resources were first published in Issue 48 July/August 2010.
