Advent 3

Luke 1.47-55

Bold witness

On the third Sunday of Advent we hear again of John the Baptist.

Now imprisoned, John sends word to Jesus, seeking verification of his own preaching. The assurance is given in Jesus' own words: John's witness was true. And so we may take heart, as we too, witness to the one who is to come soon.

Again, Matthew has provided, in Jesus' words, the link with the fulfilment of Isaiah's prophecy, and the concern for the poor is central to both the psalm and the Magnificat. Jesus' phrase 'those born of woman' remind us of the significance of the setting of the Magnificat in the meeting of Mary and Elizabeth.
