Epiphany 4

1 Corinthians 1.18-31

Context

The reading from Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, upon which we focus today, is the heart of this series investigating wisdom and foolishness.

Common thread: Wise or foolish? (1 Corinthians 1.18-31)

At the beginning of his letter to the young but divided Corinthian church, Paul lays out the challenge that is still faced by Christian people. A commitment truly to follow Jesus seems to require some decisions that will appear foolish to the worldly and successful. The deep wisdom of the cross is that such worldly foolishness is consonant with the surprising economy of the creator God who chooses what is low and despised in the world.

An alternative thread for adults, Jesus Christ is true wisdom from God, is based on 1 Corinthians 1.18-31.
