In a break from the very practical, we move to explore the metaphor of the vineyard this week. A capacity to explore metaphor is a key skill for unravelling and delighting in biblical writing and teaching.
The Old Testament and Gospel readings are closely related. The Gospel assumes a knowledge of the cultural context of the Isaiah reading, if not an acquaintance with the passage itself. Here we simply explore and learn about the vineyard as a foundation for working with these images each time we encounter them in our exploration of the Bible.
An alternative thread, Gaining Christ, explores Philippians 3.4b-14.
