Christmas 1

Luke 2.22-40

Identity

Three weeks in which we explore the relevance of the biblical writers' use of 'identity' and 'calling' to the ongoing relationship between God and humanity.

Week 1: Identified as Saviour

On the first Sunday after Christmas we read the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, which marks the end of Luke's nativity story, and see how Simeon and Anna affirm the identity of Jesus, foretold by the angel at the annunciation.

This week's reading, Luke 2.22-40, provides an opportunity to:

  • encounter Jesus through the eyes of those who met him
  • recognise the importance of the Jerusalem Temple to the Jewish community
  • consider the significance of names in conferring identity.

These resources were first published in Issue 57 January/February 2012.
