Call to wonder

Matthew 2.1-12

Call and response – Week 1 of 3

Three weeks in which we see the stimulus for Jesus’ ministry and destiny emerge from the Gospel readings.

Call to wonder

Today we hear Jesus’ destiny emerge from the story of the visit to Bethlehem of wise men who were seeking the king of the Jews. Their information is scanty and they go first to Jerusalem, alerting King Herod to the advent of a possible rival. His advisers consult the prophets and confirm that the Messiah will be born in Bethlehem, so the wise men amend their plans.

This week’s reading, Matthew 2.1-12, provides us with an opportunity to:

  • wonder about the mystery of the story and the symbolism of the gifts
  • reflect on the journey we’re called to make this year.
