Introduction
The Gospel foretells the coming of the Spirit that is described in this week’s reading from Acts (Acts 2.1-21), and many churches will be celebrating at Pentecost. Jesus teaches that as his followers, the Easter People, we will do great works; and that this Spirit will be our helper and guide. So, what great works might we achieve? Where do we see this Spirit of change in action? And how do we meet the Spirit-helper in our lives?
Context
- It's the start of Christian Aid week, a great example of bringing about change in the world. From worms to climate change, it’s not too late to download some great resources for spirit-filled action.
- Climate change may be behind the disastrous fires in Canada, a weather reporter suggests.
- As the government announces that the UK will accept more child refugees, churches are on the front-line of refugee support and advocacy.
- The EU debate continues with the question of whether EU membership supports or undermines social justice. Does the notion of achieving greater works help us to decide on the value, or otherwise, of the European community?
- The controversial Key Stage 2 SATS week draws to an end amid family boycotts and leaked test papers. Whatever your view about whether SATS meet the goal of better educational achievement, the impact on young children has to be a concern.
Reflection
The Christian Aid week materials focus on the effects of climate change, with flooding in Bangladesh, while fire rages in Canada. These big events remind us of God's power, echoing the raging wind and fire of the Pentecost story. The idea from the Gospel that we can join with Jesus in achieving ‘greater works’ may feel disturbing. We can distrust power and its potential to corrupt and destroy. Christian Aid points the way to harnessing the power of the Christian community to the common good.
Another issue where we can see churches leading a spirit of change, loving as Jesus loved, is in the refugee crisis. Does this shed the light of truth on the future of the EU? ‘I dream of a Europe where being a migrant is not a crime but a summons to greater commitment on behalf of the dignity of every human being …’ (Pope Francis sharing his vision for Europe). What vision for Europe does the Spirit inspire in us?
John uses the word Parakletos in Jesus words about the Spirit, translated in the NRSV as Advocate. Other translations include Comforter, Counsellor, Encourager or Helper. Just the kind of help our children and young people need at the moment, with the pressure to achieve and succeed. And a comforting reminder that the Spirit is with us for ever, helping and encouraging us as we strive to keep Jesus' commandments. Do we also need to be advocates for our children, speaking out truth to protect them from policies that harm?
Prayer
Inviting the spirit of change
You can use this prayer in a time of invitation, to welcome the Spirit into your life.
Prepare a quiet space by lighting a candle or small lamp to remind you of the presence of God. Seat yourself comfortably and close your eyes. Spend a few moments settling quietly, and tuning out the sounds and thoughts of the day. Focus on your breathing: gently in and out.
Invite the spirit to be with you, using these words:
– as you breathe in, silently say, ‘Spirit of change’
– as you breathe out, silently say, ‘be with me now.’
Repeat this with each breath for a few minutes.
After a while, allow your mind to empty, creating space for the Spirit to speak to you. Then gradually allow your mind to focus again on the sounds and sensations of the space, and open your eyes.
Spend a few more quiet moments knowing and giving thanks for God's presence in your life.
Questions
- What 'greater works' do you think God is calling us to do today?
- Where do you see signs of God's Spirit working in our world?
- How do we experience God's spirit in our lives?
Action
Be an advocate for a person or group in need this week. Support Christian Aid, join an on-line petition, or help someone speak up about their situation – perhaps a friend needs a supporter to make a complaint or sort out some tricky financial or personal affairs.
Young people
Research and share examples of different ways Christians put their faith into action, bringing God's spirit of change into the world. The REQuest website is a useful source, and of course Christian Aid. Choose an action you can join in with or discuss where you think God might be calling you to start your own.
Jane Chevous combines trying to be a spirit of change through her creative learning company, Reshapers CIC, with sailing the Pacific coast of Mexico.
