Proper 16

Matthew 16.13-20

Peter, the rock (AAA)

Calling someone a ‘rock’ is somewhat ambiguous. It might mean you think they are entirely reliable, someone to be trusted in any circumstance. But it might mean you think they are not very bright, that you almost have to take a hammer and chisel to get new ideas into their heads. Perhaps Jesus means both when he nicknames Simon ‘Rocky’. It’s not unusual for Jesus to show that kind of subtle sense of humour.

Jesus sees our potential (CYP)

We think about Peter when he declared Jesus to be the Messiah. Jesus responded to Peter by making huge promises to him. Jesus saw the potential in Peter, and sees the potential in us too.

Who are you? (AAA)
