Proper 24

Matthew 22.15-22

Context

Our exploration of Christian community is sharply focused this week as we read of Jesus’ discussion with the Pharisees about paying taxes to Caesar. A complementary reading from Isaiah reflects on the leadership of Cyrus, the successful and tolerant king of the Persian Empire during Hebrew exile. Our dependence on creation and the need to live within the boundaries of the state mean that we cannot live as though in a faith vacuum.

Common thread: Two sides of the coin (Matthew 22.15-22)

The ROOTS resources – for adults, all ages together, children and young people – draw on the Gospel and the Old Testament reading to consider the way in which, as Christian people, we relate to the secular state in which we live. This week’s Fruit of the Spirit is patience.

An alternative thread for adults – A prayer for you – drawn from the First Letter to the Thessalonians, looks at the need for patience to live out the gospel and affords links with Healthcare Sunday.

These resources were first published in 2008.
