Advent 1

Mark 13.24-37

Context

On the first Sunday of Advent we embark upon the reading of a new Gospel, Mark. We do not, however, begin at the beginning. We leap in at the middle to encounter Jesus warning that there will be signs. He is describing what ‘will’ happen. We are left with no doubt that we are looking forward. Despite the advice over the past few weeks to prepare and make sure we are ready, there is a marked change of gear this week. Something is going to happen.

Common thread: Watch the signs (Mark 13.24-37)

The ROOTS resources this week draw upon a reading from Mark’s Gospel to mark the beginning of Advent and prepare us for the coming of the Son of Man. Signs will mark this.

An alternative thread, Recognising what God has done, within the Word and response material for adults draws primarily upon Isaiah 64.1-9.

These resources were first published in 2008.
