Proper 26

Matthew 23.1-12

Context

Throughout Europe the clocks changed on 26 October and the evenings are dark: we cannot escape winter. But with the beginning of winter comes the countdown to Christmas. Even before Advent is upon us, we must think of preparation for the coming of Christ. This week all the readings address behaviour. Micah fulminates against paid prophets who tell people what they want to hear, while Jesus points out the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and reminds us we are all students and should identify our teachers with great care.

Common thread: We are all students (Matthew 23.1-12)

The ROOTS resources this week look at what it means to be a learner – and what makes a good teacher. Jesus warned his followers not to be hypocrites like the Pharisees. True learning requires humility and is never completed. God is the true teacher. We cannot afford to be self-satisfied. Micah and Paul bear this out in different contexts.

An alternative thread, True Holiness, draws on 1 Thessalonians 2.9-13 in addition to the Gospel reading.

These resources were first published in 2008.
