Proper 28

1 Thessalonians 5.1-11

Context

As winter deepens in the northern hemisphere and Advent draws closer the call to be prepared persists. This week we are challenged to address two requirements: we must be children of light and we must be wise about the way we respond to the gifts God provides. By laying the two ideas alongside each other we discover that the two inform one another and can inform our approach to the Christian life.

Common thread: Children of light (1 Thessalonians 5.1-11)

The ROOTS resources this week use the Epistle to explore the way we get ready to meet Christ. The reading from the first letter to the Thessalonians reminds us to live as children of light. We can choose to be in the light and live this out, putting on hope and love and encouraging others. Those who choose to walk in the light do not need to fear the darkness.

An alternative thread, Invest what you have, within the Word and response material for adults examines more thoroughly the ideas about investment in Matthew 25.14-30.

These resources were first published in 2008.
