Lent 4

Numbers 21.4-9

Context

Today we look at some of the difficulties encountered by the people of Israel as they struggle to keep their part of a covenant based on a mutual response between God and Israel.

Common thread – Covenant struggle (Numbers 21.4-9)

The ROOTS resources this week explore one of the adventures of the people of God as they travel through the wilderness. When they complain to Moses about the trials of the journey they are confronted by poisonous snakes inflicting fatal bites. When they complain further they are commanded to look upon a bronze serpent held up by Moses on a pole. The covenant is not a onesided bargain: the quest for partnership with God involves a determined struggle in which we are expected to confront our difficulties.

An alternative thread for adults, Realising our potential, explores Ephesians 2.1-10.

These resources were first published in Issue 40 March/April 2009.
