Proper 9

Mark 6.1-13

Context

Following the three previous weeks’ readings from Mark’s Gospel which recount stunning events, we encounter a setback. Undeterred, Jesus moves on, sending the disciples out without him for the first time.

Common thread – Starting out Mark 6.1–13

The ROOTS resources this week will consider the sending of the Twelve on their first missionary journey without Jesus. This follows hard on the rejection of Jesus at Nazareth, reminding us that this is not a cosy undertaking. Having received their instructions they set off in twos, on a journey into the unknown, to discover if they are up to it and what this mission adventure will amount to.

An alternative thread for adults: Prophets aloud, looks at the reading from Ezekiel.

These resources were first published in Issue 42 July/August 2009.
