Proper 6

1 Kings 21.1b-10,(11-14),15-21a

Context

This is the second session of our four-week exploration of the Old Testament prophet Elijah. This week’s episode is a classic tale of envy, greed and wickedness.

Common thread – Elijah: Greed (1 Kings 21.1b-10,(11-14),15-21a)

The wicked and weak characters that people this week’s story could come straight from a fairy tale in any culture and this week’s Bible notes helpfully clarify the links to older teaching found in the Hebrew Scriptures. It is testimony to the genius of its ancient author that we can also spot a plot worthy of any contemporary soap opera, and come face to face with the weaknesses of ourselves and society.

An alternative thread for adults, Believing and belonging: being put right with God, explores Galatians 2.15-21.

These resources were first published in Issue 47 May/June 2010.
