Trinity Sunday

Genesis 1.1–2.4a

Context

Today, on Trinity Sunday, we explore the complicated notion of God as Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Although we can see it in the biblical texts, it did not become a worked-out doctrine until many centuries later.

Common thread: Sustaining community (Genesis 1.1–2.4a)

Today’s exploration of the concept of Trinity begins in our Old Testament reading with the first description of Creation, in which the spirit-wind moves over the waters and God speaks Creation into being. It goes on to examine the concept of Trinity as relationship.

An alternative thread, Looking for evidence, explores the Trinity by drawing from the Gospel reading (Matthew 28.16-20). It has been specially written for us by Professor John Polkinghorne.

These resources were first published in Issue 53 May/June 2011.
