The promise of God - Week 1 of 5

Five weeks in which we discover the God who is able to accomplish far more than all we can ask or imagine.

God who thinks again

Today, as we begin to consider the vastness of God’s promises, we read the final verses of the comical story of Jonah, the fairytale prophet who does everything wrong. The lectionary sets this tale alongside the story, in Mark’s Gospel, of the call of James and John, two of Jesus’ earliest disciples, who later make their own rather comical request (Mark 10.37) of Jesus.

This week’s reading, Jonah 3.1-5,10, provides an opportunity to:

  • be open to continual discovery and development in our understanding of God (AAA & CYP)
  • recognise the potential of comedy to challenge perceptions (AAA & CYP)
  • become familiar with the story of Jonah (CYP).

These resources were first published in Issue 57 – January/February 2012.
