Matthew 16.21-28

Holding on and letting go - Week 2 of 5

Five weeks in which we consider how we help and hinder each other in our response to the gospel. Read more about the distinctive nature of Matthew’s writing about Jesus found in the central chapters of the Gospel.

Suffering

Peter is horrified that Jesus is to suffer, but Jesus explains that to be
his followers we must each take up the cross.

This week’s reading, Matthew 16.21-28, provides an opportunity to:

  • explore the context of Matthew’s community (AAA & CYP)
  • reflect on the strong language Jesus uses (AAA & CYP)
  • consider what it might mean to forfeit our lives for Jesus (AAA & CYP)
  • explore what it means to be a stumbling block. (AAA & CYP)
