Matthew 16.21-28Context
The Gospel verses we read this week follow on directly from those we read last week, to complete a roller-coaster conversation. The tone shifts, moving from the kingdom to the cross.
Common thread: Cross taker (Matthew 16.21-28)
Last week, Peter having declared Jesus to be the Messiah, was entrusted with the keys of the kingdom of heaven, but today we discover that apparently only a little later, he is called a stumbling block, focused on human intentions. We begin to take the first small steps towards the journey to the cross.
