The keys of the kingdom of heaven week

20 - 26 August 2011

Proper 16

Matthew 16.13-20

Context

Following seven weeks of discovery, exploring parables and unwrapping miracles, we face some decisions this week. Who is Jesus? Peter’s response to this question is unequivocal and results in extraordinary responsibility.

Common thread: Key holder (Matthew 16.13-20)

In this week’s reading we hear Peter declare Jesus to be the Messiah. In response Jesus confers upon him the keys to the kingdom. We explore the notion of being such a keyholder and what the keys might actually unlock.
