Two disciples walk back from Jerusalem to their home in Emmaus. They are in despair about the death of Jesus. Jesus appears and walks beside them, but they do not recognise him. He teaches them from the Scriptures, and they see who he is when he breaks bread with them.It had all been happening during the past few days in Jerusalem; how could the stranger on the road not even be aware of it? The two disciples began to enlighten him (or so they thought), but in the end –once his actions had revealed his identity –it is the disciples who were enlightened. An encounter with Jesus is surely not going to leave anyone unchanged.
