Proper 29 Christ the King

Luke 23.33-43

In our time - Week 4 of 4

Four weeks in which we see how Luke explores the significance of the crucifixion for his readers, then and now.

The promise of paradise

On the last Sunday of the Church year we consider the paradox of Christ as King, crowned with thorns and hung on a cross, yet still a leader, a challenger, a setter of examples. And we are challenged ourselves by this situation. Are we bystanders and mockers, or are we those who recognise the promise of paradise?

This week’s reading, Luke 23.33-43, provides an opportunity to:

  • remember that our King wears both a regal crown and a crown of thorns (AAA & CYP)
  • explore the potential of forgiveness (AAA & CYP)
  • understand that Jesus mediates between humanity and God (AAA & CYP)
  • see the challenge to the bystander. (AAA & CYP)
