Our second intimate conversation is between Jesus and Nicodemus, a well-connected man who comes by night for fear of damaging his reputation. He features only in John’s Gospel and is present at the end when he provides spices for the anointing of Jesus’ body for burial.
In this conversation we discern the impact of Jesus’ teaching: a well-known leader seeks him out under cover of darkness. Despite the man’s determination, Jesus begins with enigmatic responses to Nicodemus’ questions but an engagement emerges and the reading closes with two beautiful verses that constitute the heart of the Christian gospel.
An alternative thread for adults, Scaling the heights, is based on Psalm 121.
